King’s Day in Amsterdam
April 26, 2016 @ 19:00 - April 27, 2016 @ 23:00
King’s Day (in Dutch: Koningsdag) on 27 April is a national holiday in the Netherlands. It is Kings’s Birthday. Until 2014 this holiday had name Queen’s Day (in Dutch: Koninginnedag) and it was on 30 April. King’s Day is celebrated in the whole Netherlands, but in Amsterdam it is a unique night and day carnival-like event with friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
The celebration attracts each year about 700 thousands visitors from all over Europe, which makes the city really overcrowded. If you plan to visit Amsterdam on King’s Day and the day before make your hotel reservation many months in advance.
Celebrating King’s Day in Amsterdam begins already on the evening of the day before, usually at 7 p.m. (King’s Night), when all clubs in the city organize special festivities. Especially for the young people this is the night to be in Amsterdam.
A rock concert on Museumplein goes on the King’s Day attracting thousands of young participants. Many clubs organize day parties as well. Speakers with loud music are put out on the street and improvised parties take place.
A lot of boats full of dancing people circulate Amsterdam canals. Many boats have own, amplified music with own DJs and are in fact sailing parties.
The day after the celebration is the hard day for garbage men.
