Genzano Infiorata flower festival
June 13, 2015 - June 15, 2015
Flowers are surely one of nature’s most beautiful creations. If you like them you must visit Italy in June. Besides usual charm of this country you may see Genzano Infiorata — flower festival in the small town of Genzano di Roma. Every year since 1778 in the second week of June local artists cover an entire street Via Belardi with intricate flower carpets inspired by famous art masterpieces.
Before the festival the citizens of Genzano decide on the theme, pick more than 350,000 flowers in the woods and gardens, arrange the petals by colors, and store them until ready for use. To create the picture for Infiorata of Genzano, the design is first sketched in chalk on the pavement. Then it’s filled in with thousands of petals and seeds, much like the making of mosaics but with flowers. The entire process starts on the Friday night before the festival and takes two or three days to complete. This beautiful festival near Rome ends on the Monday of the third week of June, when children are allowed to destroy the colorful artworks, by playing on them.
As Genzano Infiorata flower festival is a great tourist attraction it’s not easy to find a place in the town’s hotels.
NB. Genzano di Roma is not the only town in Italy where flower festivals take place so you may go to Italy and look for another one Infiorata.
